BIO5 Institute presents 4th Annual Arizona K-12 Science Teacher Symposium Sat., Sept. 25
From processing forensic evidence to exploring brain function, to studying GPS mapping, teachers will participate in a wide variety of hands-on workshops at the 4th Annual Arizona K-12 Science Teacher Symposium Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is presented by The University of Arizona’s BIO5 Institute, and takes place on the UA campus in the Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building, 1657 E. Helen St.
Early registration is $25 and includes breakfast, lunch, and a resource CD. After September 8, registration is $40. Registration is payable by check, money order, or school/district purchase order.
The morning and afternoon workshops, all of which are designed to enhance life sciences education in Arizona schools, include opportunities to build a Galileoscope, simulate an infectious disease outbreak, explore the diversity of leaves in the schoolyard, and analyze the genetics of breast cancer.
Teachers also will take part in an expo that highlights UA resources for K-12 science teachers, and network with other K-12 educators from around the state. The resource fair and closing reception will be held at the Flandrau Science Center, where teachers will have the opportunity to experience a laser light or planetarium show.
The event draws teachers from across the state; to date Tucson, Green Valley, Sahuarita, Vail, Oro Valley, Patagonia, Yuma, Kingman, Tempe, Phoenix, Bowie, Globe, Mammoth, Sierra Vista, Gilbert, and Tolleson are represented. Nearly 200 were in attendance at last year's event.
"This symposium provides a unique opportunity for teachers to engage in current research presented in a format they can bring back to their classrooms. Networking with their colleagues all across Arizona is another advantage," says BIO5’s Director of Workforce Training Kevin Hall. "This year, we are particularly excited to be adding even more workshop opportunities for teachers.”
All workshops meet Arizona science education standards, and teachers who participate receive eight hours toward recertification.
Sponsors include Rosemont Copper, Legend Equities Corporation, and BioRad.
