Top high school students perform scientific research at UA

Thanks to continuing statewide support, exceptional southern Arizona high school students  have the chance to gain hands-on experience with the biosciences and environmental health science during the annual KEYS (Keep Engaging Youth in Science) summer internship program. The University of Arizona’s BIO5 Institute and the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC) at the UA College of Pharmacy direct the program.

Students’ internship experiences  include a weeklong training institute and then research under the mentorship of UA investigators and graduate students, which culminate in presentations to their peers and the public in a poster session. They also attend weekly seminars to discuss their experiences and practice science communication skills.

The students select research focus areas that range from genetics/molecular biology, to pharmacology/toxicology and computational biology/bioinformatics.

“I love this program. I loved everything about it. You learn things in school by looking at a book, then you get to come here and really learn everything about it.” –April Pickens, Palo Verde High School graduate 2008
