Biostatistics

Statistical approaches are critical to the interpretation of the complex data sets arising in all types of biological and biomedical research. With the goal of enhancing the level and availability of expertise in biostatistics at the University of Arizona and providing increased training opportunities in this area, several initiatives are currently being developed:

  1. The Biostatistics Internship Program will provide fellowship support for graduate students to both learn and to provide biostatistical data analysis for laboratories in the life sciences.
  2. A graduate interdisciplinary program in statistics has been developed to provide graduate training in theoretical statistics and a focal point for multidisciplinary faculty interactions, collaborations, and fund-raising efforts.
  3. A search for a senior statistician to play a leadership role in the development of statistics research at the University of Arizona was completed in 2006: Professor Walter W. Piegorsch came from the University of South Carolina to lead development of the new Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (GIDP) in Statistics. BIO5 is also sponsoring junior faculty hires in the Statistics GIDP through the State's Proposition 301 initiative.
