Biology, once largely descriptive science that relied on biologists observing and describing in words what they saw, has evolved into a discipline that more often relies on mathematical models.This is driving the need for researchers trained in biology and also in mathematical and computational techniques who can use computers and mathematics to obtain better understanding of biological systems. The UA’s Arizona Research Laboratories (ARL) with grant funding from the National Institutes of Health is training graduate students to do just that.
Put simply, statistics is the science of data, employing mathematical relationships about probability and uncertainty to understand new, unknown phenomena. Statistical analysis also provides guidance in determining what information is reliable from observed data and which predictions can be trusted -- useful in a broad variety of fields, including medicine, government, education, agriculture, business, and law.
