For the sixth year, the BIO5 Inspiring Women in STEM had an engaged crowd of attendees, from community members to faculty to high school students.
Over 30 attendees took the opportunity on Saturday July 13 to learn about the work and journeys of five incredible women working in science and technology.
BIO5 Institute director Jennifer Barton gave a wonderful introduction to the event, welcoming the attendees and panelists. The keynote speaker was Karla Bernal Morales, vice president of Arizona Technology Council and University of Arizona alum, with an inspiring speech.
Panelists from the University of Arizona were:
- Teodora Georgieva - Director, GEMM Core, BIO5 Institute
- Brooke Moreno - Project Manager, CREAR, Office of Societal Impact, Research Innovation and Impact
- Shirin Doroudgar - Cardiovascular Researcher, Translational Cardiovascular Research Center, College of Medicine - Phoenix
- Marjan Aghajani - Postdoctoral Researcher, Translational Cardiovascular Research Center, Doroudgar Laboratory
They all gave excellent insight and perspective on what it is like to pursue a career in STEM as a woman. Their captivating advice was especially critical for the dozen high school interns enrolled in the KEYS Research Internship who attended the event. These KEYS intern asked questions of our panelists, especially of Moreno, a 2009 alum of the program.
We are thrilled to support these women and share their stories through the BIO5 Institute.
