Become a Member

BIO5 Membership is a non-salaried, non-tenure eligible, faculty joint appointment within the BIO5 Institute. These appointments recognize, encourage, and advance collaboration between researchers in the life sciences at University of Arizona.

Benefits:

  • Formal recognition as a BIO5 faculty member. 

  • Opportunities to participate in high-impact collaborative research projects and exclusive BIO5-sponsored programs.  

  • Assistance with development of relationships with industry and community partners (e.g., bioscience industries; Arizona Bioindustry Association; Arizona Technology Council). 

  • Opportunities to learn from and collaborate with other BIO5 members through professional development programming and special interest groups. 

  • Priority use of shared resources, cutting-edge equipment, and specialized core services and centers (e.g., microbiological media facility located in the Keating building, Brain & Body Imaging Center). 

  • Access to pre-award and post-award research administration services for multi-investigator, team-based, interdisciplinary proposals, aligned with BIO5 mission. 

  • Personalized marketing and communication support, as appropriate, to help promote research products, outcomes, and successes to a national audience (e.g., media releases, feature stories, and spotlights on the website, display monitors, and social media; event planning). 

  • Eligibility for research space in BIO5-managed buildings. 

  • Intellectual property and technology transfer assistance through Tech Launch Arizona. 

  • Influence on BIO5's strategic direction, policies, and research initiatives through participation in membership forums, committees, and special interest groups. 

Requirements and Expectations:

  • Must be a faculty member with primary appointment* at the University of Arizona.  

  • Maintain an active research program and commitment to interact with other University of Arizona scientists in multi and interdisciplinary settings**. 

  • Contribute expertise to the Institute's education, research, and outreach mission. This includes proactive contribution to mutually beneficial activities such as participating in or co-leading special interest groups, presenting at research seminars and colloquia, mentoring early-career and peer faculty; mentoring trainees in BIO5-sponsorsed programs, participating in collaborative, interdisciplinary research efforts, and engaging in high-profile networking and outreach events. Your active participation directly supports the Institute's collective success. 

  • Completion of an annual report at the beginning of each calendar with updates on accomplishments and engagement with BIO5. This brief report will inform the renewal, recategorization**, or termination of BIO5 membership.  

  • Mentorship of at least one trainee each 5-year term (at minimum) from any BIO5-sponsored program, as requested by BIO5. 

  • Mentorship of early-career and peer faculty as appropriate, including engaging in new collaborative research projects. 

  • Acknowledgement of BIO5 faculty appointment and membership where and when appropriate. Such acknowledgments might include presentations, news articles, publications, grants, research posters, digital and social media, website profiles, email signature, business cards, curriculum vitae, etc. [The BIO5 Institute is committed to gaining international recognition for excellence in bioscience research and for promoting the research of our investigators, as well as informing legislators, donors, grantors, and other community leaders of our success in effectively fulfilling BIO5’s taxpayer supported mandate.] 

  • To register for and use an ORCID identifier. 

*Membership requires approval from the dean and department head of the faculty member’s academic home. 

** Members who do not meet one or more requirements may be eligible for a BIO5 Affiliate designation. For example, faculty in the clinical scholars track who are interested in collaborative research but are unable to actively participate in BIO5 activities may be considered as a BIO5 Affiliate
