BIO5 Institute's Kelle Hyland honored as 2024 AZBio Bioscience Educator of the Year

The University of Arizona BIO5 Institute proudly announces that Kelle Hyland, program manager of outreach and engagement for the BIO5 KEYS Research Internship Program, has been named the 2024 Michael A. Cusanovich Arizona Bioscience Educator of the Year by the Arizona Bioindustry Association (AZBio). 

“Winning this award is deeply meaningful to me. I’m incredibly grateful to those who nominated and supported me, my team, and BIO5 colleagues who have made this work possible,” Hyland said. “While it may sound cliché, it truly takes a village to impact students' lives. This award underscores the vital role of education and the educators who help shape the next generation of problem-solvers.” 

Since joining the KEYS program in 2016, Hyland has exemplified extraordinary leadership and dedication, transforming the KEYS program into one of Arizona's premier bioscience education initiatives. The KEYS program provides competitively selected high school students from across the state with immersive research experiences, equipping them with STEM skills crucial for their future careers. 

Under Hyland's guidance, the program has flourished and expanded its outreach, particularly during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, Hyland successfully transitioned the KEYS internship to a virtual format, ensuring that 49 out of 50 selected students could still participate in the program despite global disruptions. Her adaptability and commitment ensured that students continued to receive invaluable research experience during significant uncertainty. 

Jennifer Barton, director of the BIO5 Institute, shared her admiration for Hyland's dedication: "Kelle's leadership has been pivotal in maintaining the integrity and success of the KEYS program. Her innovative approach to education and her unwavering support for her students make her truly deserving of this prestigious award." 

Hyland has been instrumental in increasing the diversity and inclusivity of the KEYS program. She has expanded opportunities for underserved and underrepresented students through targeted recruitment efforts, significantly enriching the educational experience for all participants. Her efforts have also secured additional funding, enabling the program to grow and support more students each year. 

“I’ve always been passionate about enhancing the lives of youth, aiming to be a positive influence and advocate for them,” Hyland added. “Mentoring is profoundly rewarding—it equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed and contribute to society. It’s fulfilling to know that through mentoring, we not only impact their lives but also help foster the next generation of mentors. My team and I take great pride in providing resources that significantly improve students' quality of life.”

The impact of Hyland's leadership extends beyond the KEYS program. Many KEYS alumni continue to engage in STEM fields, with several achieving recognition for their contributions to research and innovation. Hyland's mentorship has fostered a lasting commitment to scientific inquiry among her students, many of whom have gone on to pursue advanced degrees and careers in STEM. 

The Arizona Bioindustry Association's recognition of Kelle Hyland as the 2024 Bioscience Educator of the Year is a testament to her significant contributions to bioscience education and her enduring impact on the lives of countless students. Hyland will receive her award at the 2024 AZBio Awards in Phoenix on September 18, 2024.
