The BIO5 Institute welcomes Gina Compitello back to the University of Arizona as its new director of communications, marketing, and public affairs, effective October 13, 2025.

Gina Compitello, MA
Gina Compitello brings over 15 years of experience in strategic communications, brand development, community engagement, and organizational leadership. With a professional background spanning nonprofit and higher education, she is well-positioned to elevate BIO5’s voice and broaden the reach of its interdisciplinary research and innovation.
“Gina’s deep roots in Tucson’s creative and academic communities, coupled with her track record of participatory design, bold storytelling, and thoughtful strategy, make her an ideal fit for this role,” said Vignesh Subbian, interim director of the BIO5 Institute. “Her leadership will strengthen community ties and how we communicate the value of BIO5’s mission within Arizona’s bioscience ecosystem and far beyond it.”
In this role, Compitello will lead the institute’s efforts to tell compelling stories of research, innovation, training, and partnership. She will oversee strategic communications, marketing, and community partnerships that connect audiences to the institute’s work and support its mission.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to join the amazing team at BIO5,” said Compitello. “The research being done here is life and world changing, and I am incredibly proud to help share the stories and impact with the community to amplify the work of our members.”
Most recently, Compitello served as vice president of marketing and communications for the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, where she led a team of professionals in rebranding efforts, audience growth, earned revenue generation, and cross-sector partnerships. She previously held communications and leadership roles with Literacy Connects, the Center for Creative Photography, the University of Arizona Museum of Art, and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
