On October 8, over 115 University of Arizona researchers gathered to network over posters, lightning talks, and refreshments in the Thomas W. Keating building of the BIO5 Institute.

For over five years, the BIO5 Research & Innovation Showcase has aimed to promote innovation by providing a platform for U of A scientists to share their projects. Although many presenters and attendees are supported by the BIO5 Institute, this event is open to any university researcher interested in interdisciplinary collaboration.

For the 2024 edition of the event, faculty, staff, students, and members of the scientific community were invited to explore over 30 posters grouped by research focus, from brain and aging to infectious disease to biological sciences.

Along with a poster showcase, the current cohort of BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellows presented lightning talks on their projects supported by the BIO5 Institute. The one-year fellowship through the BIO5 Institute aims to help postdoctoral researchers transition to the next step in their careers by providing funding and professional development to support their independent goals. The fellows discussed their projects and how BIO5 has helped them achieve their goals, from conferences to purchasing research supplies.

Events like this are significant for early career scientists, providing an opportunity for them to present and discuss research. Over 35% of attendees were students, evenly divided between graduate and undergraduate.

Several posters at the event displayed the research of BIO5 student programs, including the Flinn Scholar Research Experience and the KEYS Research Internship. Both programs supported through the BIO5 Institute offer immersive and personalized research experiences with U of A mentors that help students find their path in STEM.
