Can the face coverings we use to prevent the spread of COVID-19 also help to prevent Valley Fever, the respiratory disease caused by a fungus found in the soil in our region. If you inhale fungal spores, it can cause a nasty cough and fever. Dr. John Galgiani says masks could help, but they’d have to be the highest filtration material. Since it’s hard to know where the fungal spores are, the disease is really difficult illness to prevent.
