Vignesh Subbian appointed interim director of BIO5 Institute
In mid-May, Subbian succeeded Jennifer Barton, who stepped down after a decade of transformative leadership to serve as interim vice provost for health programs at the University of Arizona.

The University of Arizona has named Vignesh Subbian interim director of the BIO5 Institute, effective May 12, 2025. An associate professor of biomedical engineering and a BIO5 member, Subbian is a health systems scientist who routinely navigates the human-technology frontier in biomedicine. He brings interdisciplinary expertise in biomedical engineering, informatics, and systems science to the role.
His leadership experience and passion for education and mentoring align with BIO5’s mission of fostering collaborative, translational research across disciplines as well as engaging with and training the next generation of scientists.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the interim director during this important time of transition. Dr. Barton, together with all of you, has built a strong foundation and positive culture to advance the mission of this one-of-a-kind institute in the entire state and perhaps the country,” said Subbian. “I am committed to continuing the momentum and supporting the impactful work to improve the health and well-being of Arizona’s people, land, workforce and economy.”
Subbian succeeds Jennifer Barton who steps down after a decade of transformative leadership to serve as interim vice provost for health programs at the U of A.
Under Barton's direction, BIO5 expanded its cross-disciplinary research initiatives, launched innovative training programs, and developed cutting-edge facilities. Notably, the institute achieved a 30-fold return on Technology and Research Initiative Fund (TRIF) investments. It advanced the education and careers of over 700 alumni through the KEYS High School Research Internship Program. Barton will continue to contribute to the university's research community in her new role, overseeing health sciences research and administration.
A national search for a permanent BIO5 director will be conducted. Subbian's leadership will continue BIO5’s momentum in interdisciplinary research and innovation.
