Local Tucsonan Mariam Rana found the confidence through the KEYS Research Internship to champion research experiences for fellow undergraduate students at the University of Arizona.

A study confirmed that tissue stiffening in the most common types of breast cancer, HER2-negative, can directly cause disease progression and metastasis, leading to detrimental outcomes for patients.This link was first described in a 2021 study by BIO5 member Ghassan Mouneimne.

BIO5 member Marc Verhougstraete and his collaborator Heidi Brown at the Mel and Endi Zuckerman College of Public Health have been awarded $200,000 in supplemental funding from the National Science Foundation to join an ongoing U of A geosciences research study of deep groundwater quality called the "Subsurface Microbe-Rock-Fluid Systems" (SMRFS) project.

On October 8, over 115 University of Arizona researchers gathered to network over posters, lightning talks, and refreshments in the Thomas W. Keating building of the BIO5 Institute.

The U of A College of Science received a National Science Foundation Research Traineeship grant to develop a graduate program in biodiversity informatics. BIO5 member Michael Barker is the principal investigator of the grant, which aims to equip students with skills in big data and a One Health framework to address the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, health, and well-being. 

Hannah Pizzato, a researcher at the U of A Health Sciences Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies, works in BIO5 member Deepta Bhattacharya’s lab to develop a stem cell-based therapy for Type 1 diabetes.

BIO5 member Jonathan Lifshitz, a research professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, was appointed a member of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke’s Neurological Sciences and Disorders study section initial review group at the National Institutes of Health.
