$2.5M NSF-funded engineering program at U of A focuses on student strengths, not knowledge deficits

BIO5 member Vignesh Subbian is the project lead in the eCAMINOS program, which is expected to encourage more undergraduates to begin and complete engineering degrees in the next few years and ultimately fill gaps in the workforce.

Clinical study confirms tissue stiffening in breast cancer can drive metastasis

Oct. 22, 2024

A study confirmed that tissue stiffening in the most common types of breast cancer, HER2-negative, can directly cause disease progression and metastasis, leading to detrimental outcomes for patients.This link was first described in a 2021 study by BIO5 member Ghassan Mouneimne.

Funding connects public health researchers with geosciences groundwater study to explore impacts of climate change and water quality on human health

Oct. 21, 2024

BIO5 member Marc Verhougstraete and his collaborator Heidi Brown at the Mel and Endi Zuckerman College of Public Health have been awarded $200,000 in supplemental funding from the National Science Foundation to join an ongoing U of A geosciences research study of deep groundwater quality called the "Subsurface Microbe-Rock-Fluid Systems" (SMRFS) project.

University of Arizona receives NSF grant to launch innovative CAMBIUM Program in Biodiversity Informatics

The U of A College of Science received a National Science Foundation Research Traineeship grant to develop a graduate program in biodiversity informatics. BIO5 member Michael Barker is the principal investigator of the grant, which aims to equip students with skills in big data and a One Health framework to address the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, health, and well-being.

Jonathan Lifshitz named to NIH neurological study section

Oct. 7, 2024

BIO5 member Jonathan Lifshitz, a research professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, was appointed a member of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke’s Neurological Sciences and Disorders study section initial review group at the National Institutes of Health.

Study of infertility, health among women of Mexican heritage funded by $2.2M NIH grant

BIO5 members Leslie Farland and John Ruiz are a part of a team at the the U of A Health Sciences and the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública in Mexico using a $2.2 million National Institutes of Health grant to explore the link between infertility and long-term health issues among Hispanic women of Mexican heritage.
