BIO5 member Marc Verhougstraete and his collaborator Heidi Brown at the Mel and Endi Zuckerman College of Public Health have been awarded $200,000 in supplemental funding from the National Science Foundation to join an ongoing U of A geosciences research study of deep groundwater quality called the "Subsurface Microbe-Rock-Fluid Systems" (SMRFS) project.

On October 8, over 115 University of Arizona researchers gathered to network over posters, lightning talks, and refreshments in the Thomas W. Keating building of the BIO5 Institute.

The U of A College of Science received a National Science Foundation Research Traineeship grant to develop a graduate program in biodiversity informatics. BIO5 member Michael Barker is the principal investigator of the grant, which aims to equip students with skills in big data and a One Health framework to address the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, health, and well-being. 

Hannah Pizzato, a researcher at the U of A Health Sciences Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies, works in BIO5 member Deepta Bhattacharya’s lab to develop a stem cell-based therapy for Type 1 diabetes.

BIO5 member Jonathan Lifshitz, a research professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, was appointed a member of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke’s Neurological Sciences and Disorders study section initial review group at the National Institutes of Health.

Hanami Inagaki and Sam Rose Shawley will be working with public affairs team at the BIO5 Institute in marketing, communications, and event planning.

BIO5 members Leslie Farland and John Ruiz are a part of a team at the the U of A Health Sciences and the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública in Mexico using a $2.2 million National Institutes of Health grant to explore the link between infertility and long-term health issues among Hispanic women of Mexican heritage.

A record number of KEYS alumni presented their research as the biosciences community recognized Kelle Hyland for her outstanding leadership in science outreach and education.

BIO5 member Deepta Bhattacharya is shepherding a new era in immunology research as the inaugural executive director of the U of A Health Sciences Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies.
